Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) Steelmaking
Linde works closely with basic oxygen furnace (BOF) operators, who convert blast furnace hot metal and scrap into liquid steel. Linde helps them develop cost-saving solutions, including those that use novel BOF lance tips, to increase productivity; reduce slopping; and optimize the use of alloys and fluxing agents.
Depending on the process requirements, argon or nitrogen is often bubbled through the molten metal to produce a clean steel that meets stringent specifications and is ready for casting. Slag-splashing with nitrogen through a top lance extends the furnace refractory life, ultimately reducing operating costs and improving productivity.
Finally, Linde knows that oxygen can be used in a post-combustion process, during which additional energy is realized by oxidzing carbon monoxide that emerges from the bath during processing. BOF customers rely upon Linde’s extensive expertise to maximize throughput and safety while minimizing operating costs and downtime.
Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) Steelmaking
Linde has developed various technologies for electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking that are marketed and commissioned by MORE, including:
· Oxyfuel burners
· Combination burner/injector sidewall devices
· Innovative waste gas analytical systems
Scrap melting, decarburization/refining, foamy slag practice and post-combustion are also achieved through the use of Linde technologies.
