Cupola Applications

Oxygen assisted melting in a cupola furnace is well known and has become standard practice throughout the industry. There are two methods of using oxygen in a cupola, oxygen addition to the blast air known as general enrichment and oxygen addition directly into the combustion zone known as oxygen lancing.

Linde’s injection method uses up to 30% less oxygen than general enrichment and also provides the following advantages:

  • Higher iron tapping temperature.
  • Reduction in coke consumption.
  • Better carburization.
  • Flexible control of the melt rate.
  • Rapid start up and temperature recovery after outages.
Linde developed HighJet® technology, which uses specially designed jet nozzles for better utilization of oxygen in the cupola melting process. The HighJet technology creates fundamental changes in the flow patterns in the cupola furnace. Decreased blast rate results in reduced stack gas velocity in the vertical direction of the cupola and better heat exchange between gas and charge results in improved thermal efficiency of the cupola.

Cupola Applications - HighJet Environmental Advantages

HighJet technology offers many environmental advantages:
  • 30 - 50% blast rate reduction reduces electrical power consumption.
  • 30% less blast furnace gas at lower temperatures.
  • Lower dust content in the blast furnace gas.
  • Less cool air requirements in the exhaust gas.
  • Smaller, less expensive bag house.
  • Reduction in CO/CO2 and SO2 emission.

Cupola Applications - HighJet Economic Advantages

HighJet technology offers many econimic advantages:
  • Lower investment costs for the blast blower due to smaller blast requirements.
  • Lower operating expenses for the bag house.
  • Lower disposal costs of bag house dust.
  • Bed coke reduction of 10 to 20%.
  • Charged coke reduction.
  • Higher tapping temperature.
  • Minimal start-up time after furnace downtime.
  • Minimal recovery time (e.g. metal temperature and chemistry).
  • Better optimized charge composition - lower requirements for pig iron and silicon briquettes.
  • Reduced molten iron costs.
