For our aluminum customers in particular, we have focused on the use of oxygen-enhanced combustion processes that increase efficiencies and reduce emissions. Linde also offers a wide range of inert gases that optimize process results and cut production costs. Gas purging, for example, improves the quality of the final product by degassing, inclusion removal and homogenization.
Inert gas is also used in annealing, dross cooling and extruding. For annealing aluminum coils, we use a protective nitrogen atmosphere, which reduces oxidation and discoloration; for dross cooling, an inert atmosphere enhances metal yield by preventing oxidation. The use of liquid nitrogen has also been shown to improve quality and productivity in extrusion die cooling.
