Liquefied natural gas (LNG)

Linde builds, owns and operates LNG production facilities and distributes LNG and renewable LNG to consumers on a turn-key basis. LNG is an alternative fuel that is seeing rapid growth in demand, and our expertise in liquefaction and gas clean-up processes provides a customized approach to high-quality "green" fuels production.

Linde owns and operates over 1,000 plants, and our logistics team performs several million deliveries of cryogenic gases annually. Our LNG consumers benefit from the enhanced level of service dictated by the special safety concerns for, and rapid advancements in, small-scale LNG.

Linde possesses world-class project management and on-site process optimization and management capabilities, LNG production experience, and ongoing R&D in deploying new facilities.

Liquefied Natural Gas - LNG - Technology

Linde licenses small-scale liquefaction technology developed by the Gas Technology Institute (GTI). This technology makes possible:
  • The efficient and economical production of LNG at rates of 10,000 gallons per day and above
  • Pipeline-based production of LNG for stand-alone fleets
  • Production from renewable methane sources - such as landfills, wastewater treatment plants and agricultural sources - and from associated and stranded gas and coal beds/coal mines
Our first plant will produce LNG from landfill gas in 2009 in Altamont, California, via a joint venture partnership with Waste Management, the largest owner/operator of landfills and refuse collection vehicles in North America.

Liquefied Natural Gas - LNG - LNG Uses

FooLNG is the most easily transportable form of natural gas. It is increasingly used as a fuel for heavy-duty trucks, refuse vehicles and buses.

Liquefied Natural Gas - LNG - Why LCNG?

Natural gas vehicles running on CNG can often be fueled by LNG stored on-site at fueling stations and dispensed through specially-designed pumps. LCNG provides a number of benefits over traditional CNG transportation fueling:

  • Renewable LNG can be easily transported to fueling stations, to provide renewable CNG product for cars, buses and trucks
  • The power consumption in supplying LCNG to the dispenser is four times lower than for CNG
  • For large refueling stations serving bus and truck fleets, the initial LCNG investment cost may be lower than one for CNG
  • Fleets with multiple stations can use LCNG at a significantly lower cost than installing CNG compressors at each station
  • A cryogenic system requires less maintenance than typical multi-stage compressors - the maintenance costs can be less than one-third
  • Due to the high pump flow, a LCNG system can easily use a mono-pressure buffer - allowing faster filling than with a regular cascade buffer
