Murray Hill & Providence, NJ, May 4, 2012 - Beginning at 7:45 a.m. PST today, hydrogen vented for approximately three hours from a vent stack on a hydrogen storage tube at the AC Transit Fueling Station in Emeryville, CA. Linde supplies hydrogen to the Emeryville station, which has been operating since late 2011.
Hydrogen is stored under pressure in storage tubes designed with various safety features, one of which is to vent hydrogen into the air when pressure rises in the tank. Based on the information currently available, it appears that all safety devices operated as designed. There were no injuries and no property damage.
Emeryville Fire and HAZMAT teams evacuated the area around the station as a precautionary measure. Linde technical experts are on scene, working to identify the cause of the venting.
