Murray Hill & New Providence, N.J., U.S., May 12, 2016 – During RAPID 2016, a technical expert from Linde LLC will detail key aspects of a metal 3D printing technology known as selective laser melting that fuses layers of a specialty powder metal alloy in a chamber after purging with high-purity gas, typically argon.
Linde is a global leader in industrial gases for additive manufacturing processes including heat treatment and powder metallurgy. RAPID 2016, known worldwide as the preeminent event for 3D printing, scanning, and additive manufacturing, is scheduled for May 16-19 in Orlando, Florida. The presentation is scheduled as follows:
May 19, Technical Session - R&D: Material Properties, 10:15 a.m. “Effect of Process Gas and Powder Quality on AlSiMg and Ti64 Powder Bed Fusion-Processed Parts for the Aerospace Industry”
Aluminum-silicon-magnesium and titanium 64 alloys are of high interest to the aerospace industry, and 3D printing using selective laser melting (also known as powder-bed fusion) can generate even complex forms.
“This presentation will show how much influence both the metal powder and equipment can have on the oxygen level inside the process chamber, and show that it is possible to monitor, set and control it to ensure reproducible quality,” said Grzegorz Moroz, Program Manager, Heat Treatment and Atmospheres, Linde LLC.
Since aluminum and titanium alloys are extremely sensitive to oxygen during powder bed fusion, a controlled and low oxygen level inside the process chamber is a key parameter to avoid any negative impact on final mechanical properties such as tensile strength and fatigue resistance.
Linde, a leading global industrial gases company, provides industry-leading portfolio solutions for the ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy industries, ranging from gases and equipment to process consulting and services.
